During the climb, we get our first spectacular vistas of the main Kenya massif as well as views across western Kenya. After crossing many streams and beginning of the unique moorlands, we arrive for afternoon tea and overnight.
Day 3: Likii North – Shiptons Camp
Our route on this day takes us out of the moorlands, a spectacular zone of mosses and fog that often feels mystical and magical. The day continues through giant lobelia and rock spires which line the valley walls en route to Shiptons Camp (4,200m / 13,800ft). We have dinner and overnight at the hut.
Day 4: Shiptons Camp – Mackinders Camp
On this day we leave the valley and truly enter the alpine zone. It becomes rockier and less vegetated as we enter the higher reaches. We cross high on the western flank of the massif and then drop back down through high alpine lakes, eventually arriving back at a similar altitude that we began the day.
This day has some of the most breathtaking views of the mountain as we come around the vast southwestern buttresses. We overnighted in Mackinders Camp (4,200m / 13,800ft).
Day 5: Mackinders Camp – Point Lenana – Mintos
We wake up pre-dawn at 300am in order to get high on our objective before sunrise, We head back up towards the eastern side of the mountain where Point Lenana and the Shipton route on Nelion come into view. We pass Point John and other prominent rock spires en route to the Austrian Hut (4,790m / 15,700ft).
After a spectacular (and cold) morning we arrive at Point Lenana (4,985m / 16,355ft) for an incredible view of the surrounding region and the twin peaks of Nelion and Batian. After snapping photos enjoy the leisurely morning at the beginning of the Gorges Valley with an optional side trip to the spectacular alpine lake and waterfalls of the gorge we descend to Mintos hut 4,200m for overnight in tents.
Day 6: Mintos – Meru, Mt Kenya Bandas
We wake early to begin our final descent to the Chogoria Park gate via the spectacular continuation of the Gorges Valley. This is the most picturesque of all of the massif’s valley systems with outstanding alpine likes boasting world-class fly fishing.
Hike down to Chogoria Park gate via the scenic gorges valley. We overnight at the Meru Mt. Kenya lodge (2,950m)with hot showers and refreshments.
